Psyche becomes the bride of Cupid, but knows neither his face nor his identity. To discover who he is, she spies on him as he sleeps. "Love cannot live without trust," he admonishes her before fleeing. Abandoned, and forced by Venus to perform a series of superhuman tasks, Psyche falls into a deadly sleep from which only Cupid's kiss can awaken her. This work depicts the final scene in the story of Cupid and Psyche. Cupid has just arrived, his wings are still raised and form an X with Psyche's body.
Antonio Canova was an Italian Neoclassical sculptor, famous for his marble sculptures. Often regarded as the greatest of the Neoclassical artists, his artwork was inspired by the Baroque and the classical revival, but avoided the melodramatics of the former, and the cold artificiality of the latter. His work and personality became a model for all sculptors for many years.
