Who is Kuan Yin in Buddhism? Is Kuan Yin Buddhist?

In Buddhism, Kuan Yin is considered as the most commonly worshiped Buddha after the Shakyamuni Buddha. Kuan Yin or Avalokitesvara is a symbol of the spirit of Mahayana Buddhism, always universally saving sentient beings, often helping and enlightening those who are astray.

Avalokitesvara means contemplating, and listening to all the sounds of the world. Guanyin Bodhisattva has the image of a Great Being who can always “see”, “feel” and “hear” the lamentations and sufferings of sentient beings, thereby helping them overcome accidents and overcome thousands of challenges.

Inside all pagodas, we often see The Three Holy Buddhas. The statue of Shakyamuni Buddha (Lord Buddha) is in the middle. The two sides are the statues of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Kuan Yin Buddha) and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva (Dai Shi Chi Buddha). Is Kuan Yin male or female?

In the sutras, the Lord Buddha called Guan Yin a “good man”. But we often see Kuan Yin as a woman dressed in white. Many people are still wondering: Is Kuan Yin male or female? The Lord Buddha said that Kuan Yin saves sentient beings by transforming into 32 different incarnations to adapt to the situations.

Guan Yin Buddha is a symbol of the Dharma force of compassion and enlightenment. Buddhism does not distinguish between men and women. In order to help the suffering people feel closer and more confident, the image of Kuan Yin will change flexibly, sometimes male or sometimes female.

In addition, because the subjects of Kuan Yin’s salvation are often weak and miserable people, Buddhists often compare the Buddha to a gentle mother and portray a woman with a peaceful face.
