The statue of Kuan Yin with child depicts the Bodhisattva with a gentle face, sitting on a lotus and holding a baby in her lap. She wears a Kuan Yin hat and her necklace of Happiness.

The Kuan Yin with child statue is hand carved from natural white marble, which is very solid, almost unaffected by the weather even after centuries.

Who is Quan Yin with child?

Quan Yin Bodhisattva has many different incarnations. Quan Yin with child is one of her most famous incarnation and left the most legends among her people. Guan Yin has a gentle face, hugging a child, showing the motherly love as well as the love of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with sentient beings.

Kwan Yin with child is worshiped by many families, setting up shrines to pray Her to give children to infertile families or to pray for sons.

Kuan Yin with child protects women to have a safe childbirth. Those who sincerely pray Her will be granted sons and daughters as they wish.

Meaning of Kuan Yin with child statue

Sung-tzu Guanyin means Child-Giving Kuan Yin. In China, people attach great importance to worshiping the statue of Kuan Yin with child to pray for the newlyweds to love each other, live in harmony, and soon have children. This custom is also spread through Vietnam and some other Asian countries.

Those who are childless or have no son worship the statue of Kwan Yin with child, praying for a child or a son. Kwan Yin with child statue is not only worshiped at pagodas, communal houses, monasteries but also at home in many families.

The story of Guanyin with child

In China, folk says that at Tu Van Pagoda, thanks to the worship of the precious statue of Da Bao Guanyin, millions of visitors came and their offerings were innumerable. One day, a bandit named Ho That climbed the wall to break into the pagoda, carried the statue of Kuan Yin to a remote place, stripped off all the treasures on the statue’s 18 arms, and threw the statue into the river.

When the bandit threw the Kuan Yin statue into the river, Kuan Yin had just crossed the river. Seeing the statue drifting towards Kim Lang, She decided to choose a good person who had a predestined relationship with Buddhism to ask for help.

This person’s name was Phan Hoa, working as a rice seller in Kim Lang. He was a Buddhist who liked to give alms and did many good deeds. He wished to have a son but could not, so he took his son-in-law as a son.

One day, Phan Hoa dreamed of a woman wearing a white rope, saying:

– Mr. Phan, tomorrow you go to the river mouth to wait. Between the hours of the Rat and the Horse, there will be a statue of Kuan Yin with four faces and 18 arms floating in. Carefully pick it up and then bring the statue to Ke O Pagoda, Thanh Luong mountain to repair and worship. There is a rock shaped like a lotus leaf, which can both be used as a lotus platform. If you can do this, your merit is immeasurable, you can get whatever you want.

Phan Hoa replied that:

– I will follow your instructions to do all these things. Today there is a blessing. I would like to ask for one thing.  I have not had a son for more than half of my life, I don’t know if I can have any hope?

The woman in white rope says:

“That’s easy, I’ll give you a son!”

After saying this, the woman took a white chess and gave it to Phan Hoa. He was about to ask another question but the woman disappeared, and he startled awake. The next day, Phan Hoa ran to the river mouth to wait, and indeed saw a wooden statue of Kuan Yin slowly drifting in.

He carefully picked up the statue and brought it to Ke O Pagoda. He spend money to hire workers to repair the Bodhisattva’s body, took a lotus leaf-shaped stone and sculpted it into a lotus. When the robber Ho That stole the statue, the lower part of the statue accidentally broke, so the statue could not stand. The statue could only lie on its side on the lotus platform, so it was named “Kuan Yin lying on the lotus flower”.

At that time, Phan Hoa realized that the person who came to his dream was Guan Yin Bodhisattva. He invited a famous painter in Kim Lang to draw the image of the Bodhisattva. With a sincere desire for a son, he also asked the painter to draw a boy sitting in the lap of Lord Guan Yin. He named the picture “Sung-tzu Guanyin” (Guanyin with child), and worship it everday. Not long after, Phan Hoa’s wife gave birth to a cute son.

The story of Phan Hoa worshiping the Guan yin with child and having a son was spread everywhere, gradually becoming a custom in worship.
